So, after all the warnings, I was mentally prepared for a dark, erotic, novel filled with drugs, sex and blood. I wasn’t disappointed … but … I was surprised. Surprised that I would fall in love with Javier Bernal, rooting for a drug lord to win the woman. Surprised that I would cheer when Luisa came into her own and shot to kill. Surprised that the book had an HEA that actually left me with a smirk on my face and wondering what the hell Este was going to do now.

How were her parents going to be safe? How was she going to withstand being away from Javier and deal with the abuse from Salvador again? How was Javier going to keep his Cartel together without killing Luisa as he said he would?

A strong book filled with amazing main characters and interesting supporting characters; a story line that has you breathlessly turning the pages to see what they will do next – which Javier will be there – which Luisa will show up. Is it dark? Yes. Is it erotic? Yes. Was there blood? Yes – with knife play that was very intriguing. It is not a book for the weak of heart or for people who may be squeamish about rough sex, torture or murder. Believe it or not, Dirty Angels was actually a love story that showed us that a King would do whatever it took to bring his Queen to the throne.

So after finishing Bold Tricks last year I knew that I would eventually read Javier's book. When I read that series I did find Javier sexy but I also felt he was a hard man to get a read on. Most of his decisions were selfish and they were made so he could gain more power. So I went into Dirty Angels with all that in mind and honestly I knew Javier would be challenging. I was surprised because yes he's still power hungry but the author tried to give us a softer side of him. For me Luisa was the highlight of this story, she was amazing. It's very rare that I love the h more than the H but that was definitely the case in this story. She was the complete opposite of Javier, she was selfless and the love she had for her parents and their well being forced her to make a hard decisions that she paid dearly for. Her husband Salvatore was the devil and what he did to her in the short time they were married was heartbreaking. I really enjoyed her with Javier but he did annoy me with his selfish decision towards the end although he did redeem himself. I look forward to the next book in this trilogy.
Dirty Angles brings us Javier's story. Javier is our favorite little Mexican cartel leader from the Artist Trilogy. This book takes place approximately three years after Bold Tricks wraps up. Javier is making a play to take property from Salvador Reyes, who is the leader of the #1 drug cartel in Mexico. In order to negotiate with him he takes Salvador's bride of just two months, Luisa. Luisa is a former beauty queen who has grown up in poverty. The last few years of her life have been s***ty as she works hard to pay the bills for herself and her ill parents. She was essentially forced into being Salvador's wife to keep her family safe. The book opens up with her trying to escape Salvador only ending up being kidnapped by Javier's men instead. Out of the frying pan and into the fire.

This book is all I expected and more. Javier is the gritty, frustrating, charming man we saw in the Artist Trilogy. The subject matter in this book is most certainly not for those looking for something light nor is it for the faint of heart. Luckily, I am neither. I couldn't put the book down. Karina Halle has a way with words. Every story of hers that I have read stays with me long after I put it down. And Dirty Angels will be no different.

The characters are dynamic and believable. You can hear the accents of the character when you are reading. You can practically smell the dirt in the air and the heat on your skin. When I heard that Karina was going to write this book I wondered who would be the Queen to Javier's King. Who would (or even could) replace Ellie. Luisa was perfect. And I'm not going to explain why as I don't want to spoil Luisa's evolution. It's a work of art.
