Felt the book was a RIP off. Someone was at their keyboard and just wrote out personal notes. NOTHING on places to stay and very little on places to eat. I couldn't believe that this book was actually published. Was going to use this book as a guide for our first trip and now think we'll go elsewhere. Book sounds like only water sports and heavy water activities. BAD purchase!
This book is a must have for anyone visiting the island of St. Croix. From food and restaurants to history and hidden hiking gems - Fantastic St. Croix has it all. The author, John "Poppa" Boyd, is the foremost authority on all things St. Croix. Our vacation was much more enjoyable with this literature as our guide. The content and price cannot be beat!
The author is a long-time resident of St Croix who got the idea to write the book as he was compiling information for guests of his vacation rental. From his writing, you get the sense he is someone who loves people and loves where he lives. There are a few interesting tidbits in the book, but it is poorly edited. It is full of misspellings and typographical and grammatical errors that slow the reader down. In too many places, the author states he has no first-hand knowledge of what he is writing about, then cites reviews he has read online. In making my purchase decision, I should have known better than to judge this book by its beautiful cover. The photos inside are grainy black-and-whites, many of the author and his family. Some readers may find them endearing, but I found them less than helpful in planning my trip. While I'm sure many would enjoy meeting the author to hear his stories of island life over an adult beverage, I cannot give this book high marks as a vacation planning guide. I bought the book because it was the only one I could find that focused on St. Croix, while ones from the established travel publishers cover multiple islands, and therefore contain lots of information I don't need. This book has left me with the need to purchase another in order to get the information I need to plan my trip. I realize it takes a great deal of time and effort to put a book together, though this one leaves me with the impression that it was drafted in a weekend.

A lot of information...well written
Months before boarding my flight to St. Croix I had the wisdom to purchase John Boyd's "Fantastic St. Croix..." book. Now that I have read it twice from cover to cover, I feel comfortable knowing that I am armed with a book which will give me a comprehensive familiarization of the magnificent island of St. Croix.
John has also provided his personal e-mail address (page #157) in the book. Thanks to him doing so, I have been able to ask him a whole array of questions about life on St. Croix. In summary, I have read volumes of travel books covering tourist sites from South Florida to South Africa. No other book was as expansive as "Fantastic St. Croix...Too much to do in one vacation" Buy It !!
