In the sequel to The Yellowstone Conundrum we follow our characters through the first week after the eruption of the 55-by-35 mile Yellowstone caldera. The battle for the city of Seattle rages as gangs attempt to burn the city to the ground. Ray Spaudling and a rag-tag group of civilians leave the Seattle Library and help in the fight. The weather clears in Denver but there is four feet of volcanic ash everywhere. Water from the Fort Peck Dam reaches Lake Sakakawea after leveling Williston, ND. What is Penny going to do with Amanda and Jason, the two children she rescued from wolves? Robert O'Brien and Charley Lame Deer reach the Garrison Dam, which like Fort Peck Dam is earthen in construction. Will it hold? Nancy O'Brien leads a group of students and NEIC employees out of harms way toward Loveland Pass.

Cameron Hedges and Betsy Jamison help mayor Wade McGriff as the remaining residents of Wright, Wyoming must seek shelter anew.

In this sequel, Randall continues his vision of life (and death) after the Yellowstone volcano erupts, causing widespread devastation; earthquakes, flooding, dam failures, nuclear power-plant meltdowns... and the subsequent breakdown of human society in some affected areas. Again, it's an engrossing and incredibly well-researched story. The author gets a little lost in the technical details at times (and I started to get a little lost in the array of characters) — but this is a worthy read, which I simply had to finish.

The editing errors were, once again, LEGION. As a professional copy editor, this usually frustrates me to the point where I just give up and walk away. This book, I had to finish — and I respect the author's ability to weave all his scientific research into the story, and into his characters' lives. Yet I must ask: Did this have to be rushed into print, without ANY editor doing a quick comb-through? (And if one did — then FIRE his ass.)

Most of the errors are minor, and any real editor would have caught them: "Artic" instead of "arctic"; half-Indian kids whose hair changes color mid-story; "Taking our Lord's name in VEIN" (oh, c'mon!)... Also, "eek" isn't the same as "eke"; "withhold" isn't the same as "withstand"; "eminent" isn't "imminent"; "compliment" isn't "complement"; "peek" isn't "peak"; "verses" isn't "versus"; "tinkle" isn't the same as "tickle"; "peal off" isn't the same as "peel off"; missing quotation-marks (making it difficult to know who's speaking); bad hyphens (like "on-going"); misplaced commas... A "slut" can't "father" anyone, as far as I'm aware. And there's no such thing as a "tracker-trailer" (s/b "tractor-trailer). It's as though these books were RUSHED to publication without ANYONE at the publishing end looking at them — or even using Spellcheck. And this story certainly deserved better!

Mistakes like this might cause some readers to flee screaming. But that would be a mistake.

Despite all these literary pratfalls, I found the vision itself gripping enough to ride it through to the end — and to buy & download the next installment. Randall is a REAL STORYTELLER. And after all, it's the author's job to TELL a story — and the job of the publisher/editor to correct the grammar, etc. (There have been plenty of famous authors who couldn't spell!) ... When the original book and its sequels are available in print form (at a reasonable price), I will add them to my post-apocalyptic collection... while still hoping that some competent editor gets hold of them FIRST.

Scorched EarthThe Complete Sequel to the Yellowstone Conundrum Is This It? Book 2 edition by John Randall Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This story is somewhat confusing, but I suspect the world would be a very confusing place under the conditions of the book. It gives a very believable description of the events that would take place after such a natural disaster, and in shifting from place to place to tell the story, it is confusing. The characters are very believable, including the marauding mobs and gangs. It is well worth the read for a not unbelievable occurance.
The plot of this series is well thought out, and the characters and situations are compelling. The detail is excellent, I haven't found factual errors. My biggest gripe is the horrible editing. Missing words, bad sentence structure, and incomplete thoughts make reading this series a chore. But, I really want to know what happens to Penny and the kids, Cam and Betsy, and Ray and Molly, so I will keep on slogging.
I love the series and have recommended it to others . The only thing that irkes me is the sexual stuff the writer has tried to write I find rather juvenile. It involves a middle age person and a 22 year old doesn't matter if it's a man or woman . Makes me think the writer is 22 and thinks everyone wants him. I can and have overlooked this because I do like the rest of the book. I'm on book three so that says it all , but I am always saying oh brother really.
Read the first book this is the second in the series I wish there was a third as this one kind of leaves you worried about all the people you grow to love and worry about I would purchase from this author again

Added this on December 7th
Found two add on books to the series reading them now so happy I found them the author would sell more if they let people now
There are more series out there I had to hunt for mine, but maybe they will see people love the series and make it easier to purchase all of them!
Found them looking under authors name!
Excellent "what if" follow up to 'Yellowstone Conundrum' - just imagining what could happen if the Yellowstone caldera came to like and exploded (again -after 250,000 years). We've been to Yellowstone and have seen the museum displays that show how the lava hot spot has migrated over time to be under the park. Realistic portrayal of how events could cripple the country. While this could be the worst case scenario, it's not out of the realm of possibility.
I really hate it when a major character has a MAJOR CHARACTER FLAW !I am not going to play Spoiler .... But IMHO no upstanding person and ...say ...they "practiced no-fault, no guilt passionate sex on the floor"" Sorry no character and it destroyed the faith I had in that" character" and made me put the book down for quite awhile!! !!! When they are Married and their spouse and their situation is UNKNOWN to you ...You sure as hell don't F...k around on them !!!! You go from LOW Class ( because your play'in on the edges) to NO Class ( Because you cross the line) !!!! I see no way for this character to redeem themselves....They had no excuse or reason to do what they did ...Kinda hope they suck some Black Ash !!!! .

Well written .... Just one very ...very Sad character !
I think I liked Book 2 even more than Book 1, and really the only complaint I have--still--is Randall's use of pictures throughout the book. It's distracting and unnecessary. Besides, you can't enlarge them even if you want to look at them, and reading by is kind of hard on the eyes as it is. Other than that, I am still enjoying it and ready for Book 3.
