I was looking for a light read when I started this. I liked the premise. But I could barely force myself to finish. I was CONSTANTLY rolling my eyes at their behavior and their prose. The problem was the characters jumped into bed basically immediately, which in the time and place they were living is completely unbelievable. Especially as casually as they did. This is especially unbelievable for the female character. And I just didn't buy into their romance at all. It felt very shallow. Also, for two people getting married for the sole reason of claiming an inheritance, why would they risk waiting until the very last possible second to actually marry rather than doing it earlier? They hung out for two weeks prior to the scheduled ceremony. It was an arranged marriage; it's not like they had to really get to know each other. It made no sense to me. Nor did the legalities of the will (it wasn't so easy back then to just will away an estate), the last minute drama (I won't spoil it), the brothers' laid back reaction to said drama, the mother's side plot, and a million other things. It wasn't the events themselves so much as the character's behavior throughout; it was just so unbelievable that I couldn't enjoy the story.Tags : Married By Midnight (Pembroke Palace Book 4) - Kindle edition by Julianne MacLean. Married By Midnight Pembroke Palace Book 4 edition by Julianne MacLean Romance eBooks Reviews
Other reviewers have talked about what this story is. Basically the 4th son of a Duke needs to be married by Christmas, well more like Christmas Eve. A woman is chosen for this farce of a marriage and the charade begins.....
What I liked about this book was that it was a girly, cute story, boy meets girl, boy likes girl, that sort of thing. Now the what I really didn't like, the story is set in an era where ladies had to be chaperoned, physical contact was set to bare minimal as in hold the guy's arm while you dance or take a walk about the room. But Ms. MacLean deviates from that era and tells a story of romance where the characters are physically intimate before marriage, after all its going to happen. There's too much freedom to live a life of "sin" yet its frowned upon and Anne has lived with the consequences of that choice......I bought this book hoping for a clean historical story, what I got wasn't it.
A final note.....no one falls in love that fast....
I find I am at a bit of a disadvantage with this story. I got it because it was offered for free, but the problem is, I am coming in on the fourth story of the series. That is not a bad thing, but I wish I had read the other three to be more fully invested in this story. However, I have to say that I absolutely loved the author's story line. It was imaginative and very different kind of story than the normal snobby Victorian.
I loved that Garrett the fourth son of the Duke of Pembroke was really an illegitimate son and that Lady Anne Douglas was a ruined woman of her time. Garrett must wed before Christmas Eve so that he and his brothers can inherit. The Duke has decreed that if all four sons are not married by that time he wills everything to the Horticultural local Society. Since Garrett has been banished out of the country, and he refuses to go about obtaining a bride to marry in the usual manner, his brother set out to find someone who will agree to marry Garrett and consummate the marriage. Who will the day after the marriage, Christmas Day quietly fade away to live apart on an allowance for the rest of her life.
Ruined and unable to marry Anne jumps at the chance to live a life of comfort and seclusion in exchange for marrying a man she knows nothing about. Needless to say, all great plans of mice and men oft go astray. This one is no exception.
It's a wonderful and fun story and one that will have you believing is all the things that romance is about. Read and Enjoy
If you are a real stickler for historical accuracy and basic logic then this might not be the book for you. I liked it because the author made it easy to just sit back and enjoy the ride without caring about a lot of details. The story is briskly paced at the expense of getting to know the cast of characters a little better but as this is part of a series I could accept that some of the more interesting characters will be fleshed out in their own stories. The H and h are likable and I think the author does a good job of explaining that what they at first feel for each other is plain and simple lust -- I would have liked it less had she made this one of those love at first sight for no reason kind of stories. That's not to say they don't fall in love quickly but, hey, it's a romance novel - I knew what I was getting into. What kept me from really loving this book is that I didn't come away feeling that I had ever really gotten into the H and h's heads. Despite their pasts they, in fact everyone they encountered, seemed so very accepting of EVERYTHING. Arranged marriage with total stranger who intends to leave the country after consummation? Okay. I'm a bastard and the Duke is crazy? Oh, okay. His will has outrageous stipulations that may leave all my relatives penniless? Okay, sure. Despite having the resolution in our hands for over a week let's all decide to wait until the last possible moment to save to day? Brilliant, let's do that. I wanted a little more drama from these people, where is the emotion, the outrage, the weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth? They are all so damn mellow about the whole thing I suspect they are growing hemp in garden. That would explain why the Duke wants to leave his fortune to the horticultural society.
